I love when people tell me social media isn’t for local small businesses…

Sometimes I debate with them.

Other times I smile and nod, knowing it’s a futile argument.

Most often I point them to examples like the ones I’m sharing with you today: 6 real-life small businesses profiting from social media.

Here’s an excerpt I especially like. From Justin Levy, co-owner of Caminito Argentinean Steakhouse:

As far as our ROI on social media efforts, of course it’s always hard to determine that. But, what I do know is that since we turned our focus to social media, attracting inbound links, more internet marketing/less print advertising, etc., we have seen an approximate 30 percent boost in sales (year to date) in a time where a lot of restaurants are down 10-20 percent.

I guess it can be considered as logic, for people managing small businesses to believe that social media is not a useful tool for their small businesses. Why? Because since their businesses are small they are likely to have a few customers, that are likely to be the same and to be known by the owners. Therefore, they might believe there is no reason to actually run a social media campaign when they can communicate to their clients directly. What they are not seeing is that social media is a potential and powerful tool to obtain even more clients, that might be from different geographic areas, and they can even use the advantage of knowing their existing customers to attract new ones. Take the example of the customers' referrals on social media sites.
